Project Progress

Year Explanation
1930 to 1986 Chemical activities and reclamation
1987 NSW Government served notice on Union Carbide to clean up contamination on its site
1988 Contaminated sediments identified in Homebush Bay
1990 to 1992 Remediation undertaken by Union Carbide (restructured and renamed Lednez) on its site to an industrial standard
1992 to 1997 Further tests undertaken on contamination of land sites and the bay
1997 Government allocated $21M towards bay remediation. Called for Expressions of Interest to identify proven technology to destroy contaminants
2000 An Australian consortium comprising Thiess Services and Trafalgar Corporate were named the preferred proponent to use leading edge technology to clean contaminated land and water at Homebush Bay.
2001 The heads of agreement between the consortium and government has been signed and further detailed contract negotiations are underway.  Thiess is to continue the EIS process.
2002 A conditional remediation deed was signed between the Waterways Authority and Thiess on 22 November 2001. Thiess expect to have the EIS ready for public exhibition in May 2002.
