What are the proposed standards for dust control?

Will there be penalties for breaches of dust standards including failure to cover loads?
Yes.  The fines will be those stipulated in EPA regulations.

4.

Is research being done to understand the local wind patterns?
Yes.  Research will be done.

5.

Does the preferred tenderer, Thiess Services, have a good record?
Yes.  Theiss Services has a demonstrated record in major and sensitive cleanup projects. 

6.

How long will the remediation go on for at Rhodes?
It is estimated the project will take between three and seven years depending on the capacity of the processing plant and the permissible working hours.

7.

Will results of the monitoring be published frequently, including on the Internet?
Yes, it is our intention to regularly brief community groups and to use this web site to carry information throughout the process. 

8.

What are the proposed standards to prevent pollution of the water during remediation of the land and sediments?
The standards to be used for the control of water quality on the site will be those stipulated by the EPA.

9.

Will the design of water management provide for rains?
Yes. In consideration of the project duration of up to seven years, a one in 100 year storm frequency will be designed for.

10.

Will there be penalties for breach of water pollution standards?
Yes.  Penalties will be those stipulated in EPA regulations.

11.

How will the children at Yaralla Sea Scouts, Epping Sea Scouts and Concord and Ryde Sailing Club and the various school rowing teams which train in the Homebush Bay area be protected during the remediation period?
Only small sections of the bay adjacent to the sea wall will be screened off at any one time.  This will allow sediments to be removed without disturbing the boating activities on the rest of the bay.  

12.

How will the various seagrasses, mangroves, fish, wetlands, and birds be protected from dust and water pollution?
These matters will addressed by the EIS consultant as part of the environmental impact assessment.

What are the contaminants present in the sediments and land?

What are the processes for dealing with these contaminants?
See Remediation Process.

15.

What monitoring of compliance with standards is proposed during the remediation process?
Under the Contaminated Land Management Act the monitoring of compliance to EPA standards will be undertaken by an independent auditor.

16.

What standards or limits will be enforced on noise from the site and from the movement of vehicles?
The standards to be used for the control of noise and traffic movement will be as stipulated in the conditions of development approval.

17.

What monitoring will take place to ensure noise standards are not breached?
Noise monitoring at various locations around the boundary of the site will be included in conditions of approval.

18.

Will the community be kept informed throughout the life of the project?
Yes, see Consultation Process.

19.

How will the workers and residents be protected during remediation?
Workers will be protected under the OH&S Act while residents will be protected through EPA regulations.

20.

Will any contaminated material be transported outside the site boundaries?
This will be subject to consideration as part of the EIS process. It is proposed that initial processing will be undertaken on the site with the concentrated extract being transported to an existing treatment plant in Queensland. 

21.

What restrictions will exist on work hours and use of heavy vehicles in local streets?
The working hours and traffic conditions will be an outcome of the EIS process and will be part of the conditions of approval.

22.

What standards will be required to ensure contaminated materials are not blown or dropped from loads or vehicles outside the site boundaries?
The EPA regulations governing the transport will be applied. 

23.

Will the river be used for transport of contaminated material?
No.
